Biography
Born in Vietnam, Christina Sing (Born Phuong Thao Nguyen)
immigrated to Canada at the age of 6. She was first
introduced into the Vancouver music scene by dancing to
house music, and inevitably becoming a DJ worshipper.
Already an avid and encouraged singer in her Church Choir,
she was eager to share her lust for music. Christina's
strong, soulful sound belied her untrained past, and her
creativity flourished in collaborations with local DJ's
producing underground dance music. At the young age of 18,
she was rewarded with her first 12" vinyl release on PFB
Records, an independent Vancouver music label. Her first
track called "Time", cowritten with producer Sean Dimitrie
(Bombay Records) and remixed by Luke McKeehen (Nordic
Tracks) was put out in 1998. Sean Dimitrie and Christina
Sing (then still known as Christina Nguyen) developed a
working relationship that birthed 2 worldwide vinyl
releases. "S'more" (remixed by DJ Rasoul and DJ Iz) was put
out by Transport Records in 2002 and "Every Player's Dream"
by Village Recordings in 2003. Both tracks received
considerable airplay from overseas in Europe and South
Africa ("S'more" charting Top 20 in DJ Magazine).
Not yet out of high school, Christina found herself
fronting original acid jazz band "Shazzam", maintaining
residencies at local Vancouver hot spots. Inspired by the
talent of the seasoned players in the band, Christina
returned to school studying Classical Voice at Douglas
College for 1 year. Feeling the need to improvise and
write, Christina left Douglas and went on to study Jazz at
Capilano College and VCC for the next 3 years, earning a
diploma in Vocal Jazz. Burning the candles at both ends,
Christina studied by day and played in local clubs at
night, writing songs prolifically with various producers,
namely Rick Kilburn, Sean Dimitrie and DJ Ali. As her
exposure to music was widened from just the Vietnamese
opera at home, Church hymns and house music to the worlds
of classical counterpoint, jazz idioms, hip hop and rock
and roll, Christina's sound naturally revealed eclecticism
that had been dying to be unleashed. Draped with husky soul
and blessed with a 4 octave range, Christina knows how to
deliver melody and emotion in any style of music.
Constantly challenging herself, Christina has also
completed the Voice Over Acting program at Vancouver Film
School, studied acting at the William Davis Center, and is
signed to Pacific Artists Management. She has been a
featured in ads for Aritzia, Choices, The Civilization
Project, and CBC news.
Christina continues to perform regularly in Vancouver,
developing her skills as a producer, bandleader and
business woman. With her energetic and personal performance
style, Christina reveals her growing arsenal of material
and musical growth maintaining residencies at Ginger 62,
The Odyssey, Opus Bar and The River Rock Casino to name a
few. She has also performed at large scale events at The
Ford Centre, The Commodore, Devonian Gardens (AB), The
Nexen Building (AB), The San Jose Centre for Performing
Arts (CA), La Mirada Centre for Performing Arts (CA), The
Santa Clara Convention Centre (CA) and The Royal Alberta
Museum (AB). In 2007 Christina released a track with
Shazzam titled "Huff N Puff" featured on "Om Lounge Vol.
10" compiled by Om Records. Most recently Decks Tracks from
Germany will be releasing her new single with Destineak
"Gimme What I Came For".
